The universities can not be released from the history of Ujung Pandang IKIP Institute For Education staff's (LPTK).
Originally IKIP Ujung Pandang as a teachers college and science education (FKIP) from the University of Hasanuddin Makassar, based on the SK Ministry of Universities and Science (PTIP) 1 August 1961 to 31 August 1964, based on the Decree No Minister PTIP. 30 Year 1964 Date 1 August 1961.
September 1964 s.d. January 1965 as the IKIP Yogyakarta branch, based on the Decree No Minister PTIP. 154 Year 1965 Date 1 September 1965. On 5 January s.d. August 3, 1999, are independent with the name IKIP Makassar, according to the decree the President of the Republic of Indonesia. 272 Year 1965 on 5 January 1965. At this phase, since 1 April 1972, the IKIP berrubah into IKIP Ujungpandang with the name change to become the Municipality Municipality Ujungpandang. Then on 4 August 1999 until now as the name of the University of the State University of Makassar (UNM) based on the SK President of the Republic of Indonesia. 93 of 1999 dated 4 August 1999.
