Indonesia University of Education was established on 20 October 1954 in Bandung, inaugurated by the Minister of Education Teaching Mr. Muhammad Yamin. Originally called Higher Education Teachers (PTPG), was established with the background history of the growth of the nation, to realize that the efforts of educating the nation and achieve a critical part of a complete independence. PTPG establishment of several reasons, among others: First, after achieving independence Indonesia, the Indonesian people are very thirsty education. Second, the need to prepare teachers of quality and stages to improve the quality of university education that will pioneer the establishment prosperous society.

UPI began building from the main ruins of a villa called Villa Isola, is a building used to residual period before World War II. (During the struggle against the colonizers, this building was used as headquarters of the combatants of freedom). Rubble rubble was rebuilt and then blossom into a building called Earth Siliwangi style with a magnificent architecture of the original.

Here for the first time the youth get gemblengan education teacher at the university level, as the realization of Decree of the Minister of Education Teaching and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number (35742 on 1 September 1954 on the establishment PTPG / Higher Education Teachers).

In the beginning PTPG led by a Dean who supervise several departments and / or hall, namely:

In line with the decree from the Ministry of Education, Teaching and Culture No. 40718 / S at the time, stating that PTPG can stand on its own or become a university college in the university, then in line with the University of Padjadjaran (UNPAD), on 25 November 1958 PTPG integrated into primary school by the name of Padjadjaran University Faculty of Teaching and Science Education (FKIP).

To stabilize the power system and staff's teachers, who have a variety of courses at that time, the education of teachers, BI and B II, integrated into FKIP through Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture 6 Tax Year 1961. FKIP further developed into FKIP FKIP A and B. At the same time, also stood Teacher Education Institute (IPG), which resulted in the existence of dualism in the education of teachers. To remove a duality, and on 1 May 1963 issued Presidential Decree No. 1 1963, which melt into FKIP and IPG Institute of Science Teaching and Education (IKIP) as the only institution in the university-level teachers. FKIP A / B and FKIP IPG is in the Bandung Institute of eventually becoming Sciences Teaching and Education Bandung (Bandung IKIP).

IKIP Bandung that time has five faculties, namely Faculty of Education, Faculty of Social Sciences Teaching, Teaching Faculty of Literature and Art, Faculty of Science Teaching exact sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering Teaching. In 1976 changed its name to LPPD Postgraduate School, in 1981 changed to the Faculty of Postgraduate and in 1991 became Graduate (PPS).

Regulation of higher education programs conducted by the government to implement a multiprogram and multistrata, Bandung IKIP followed up with a Diploma Program Kependidikan. To increase elementary school teachers to become qualified graduates II D, the academic year 1990 / 1991, held Program D II Elementary Education Teacher. In line with government policy in the field of higher education that provides for the extension of the mandate of Education staff's (LPTK) that should be able to anticipate demand changes and all possibilities in the future, IKIP Bandung changed to Education University of Indonesia through Presidential Decree No. RI. 124 of 1999 dated 7 October 1999.

UPI given autonomy and a Board of Higher Education Law (PT BHMN)
