The idea to have a university in South Sumatra have been there since the early 1950s, the opportunity dicetuskan a reception in the Independence day on 17 August 1952. The establishment of the Economic Fakultet officially under Syakhyakirti University Foundation was conducted on 31 October 1953 in an event attended by Mr. Hadi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Education and Culture Teaching (KDP), Drg. M. Jesus (the Governor of South Sumatra), Bambang Utoyo (TT The Sriwijaya II) and Gathmyr Ali (Chairman of the South Sumatra DPRD).
