State University of Semarang (UNNES) is the country's universities are held by the Ministry of National Education to conduct academic and professional education in a number of disciplines, technology, sports, art, and culture.

UNNES has been established since 1965 in the city of Semarang, the old city which is the provincial capital of Central Java. With seven faculties and one post-graduate program, at this time UNNES educate not less than 22,000 students who are in the ladder program Diploma, Bachelor, and Graduate.

Historical development of the State University of Semarang, previously named IKIP Semarang has started with the various teacher education institutions in the top of the SMTA. Educational institutions teachers are: Middelbaar Onderwijzer A Cursus (MO-A) and Middelbaar Onderwijzer B Cursus (MO-B). 3. Period 1965-1999: IKIP Semarang

Through the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 042/O/77 on 22 February 1977 teacher education programs in the sport back to the mother in the new vessel called the Teaching Faculty of Sport Sciences (FKIK).
Based on Presidential Decree No. 52/1982, IKIP Semarang has six faculties, namely Faculty of Education, Faculty of Arts and Language Education, Faculty of Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education, Faculty of Education and Sports and Health.
4. Period 1999-2007: State University of Semarang (Unnes)
With rising presidential Decree Number 124 Year 1999 about changes IKIP Semarang, Bandung and Medan, a university, then called IKIP Semarang State University of Semarang is abbreviated Unnes. Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 278/O/1999 the organization and governance and working Unnes No. 255/O/2000 tengang Statute Unnes, the names of the faculty in the environment is Unnes: Faculty of Education, Faculty of Language and Arts, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Sport Sciences, and Graduate.
Based on the letter of permission from the Directorate General of Higher Education No. 1850/D/T/2006, dated 6 June 2006 and Decree Rector Unnes number 59/O/2006 date June 8, 2006, stand at the Faculty of Economics (Swadaya) who inaugurated on 29 June 2006 by the Rector of Unnes.
Based on the letter of permission from the Directorate General of Higher Education No. .../D/T/2007, Date ... dibentuklah the Faculty of Law Unnes inaugurated by the Rector Unnes on 14 December 2007.

With the two new faculty, the current managing Unnes eight faculties and one post-graduate program.
