KALIMANTAN East within the area of ± 211,440 km2 with a population of 2.4 million people ± is the most provincial economic growth compared with other provinces. Natural resources were abundant stimulate this area to improve the development program as a regional asset in establishing the potential for East Kalimantan province, to empunyai excellence in various fields. For the management of natural resources (natural resources) needs to be supported by skills, human resources (HR), giving a big advantage in the globalization era laden with competition. By starting from the need for qualified human resources that is required of universities and large potential in East Kalimantan.

The University Mulawarman (Unmul) is a realization of the struggle of community leaders and local government Kaltim rising that begins with the decree (SK) The Regional Governor of East Kalimantan Level I No. 15/PPK/KDH/1962, dated June 07, 1962 and stand a university based in Samarinda with the name: University Mulawarman. To support the delivery of education programs universities establish this foundation to sustain the needs of the funds, facilities, and equipment.

Then on September 27, 1962 set as the date of its establishment Mulawarman University, according to a decree from the Minister of Education and Science No. 130 Year 1962 on 28 September 1962, and be based on the official with a decree from the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 65 dated 23 April 1963.

At the beginning of the establishment, organizing educational programs Unmul four faculties, namely: Ketatanegaraan and Ketataniagaan, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry, and Faculty of Mining. In the process of conducting the four faculties are still found many obstacles, so that at the time only the Faculty of Ketatanegaraan and Ketataniagaan that can be held, and in 1964, followed by conducting the process of learning from the Faculty of Agriculture. Then in 1966 the Faculty of Ketatanegaraan and Ketataniagaan into the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and Faculty of Economics. Because of the difficulty by the teaching staff at the Faculty of Mining is located in Balikpapan, so that in the year 1970 had closed. In the year 1978 IKIP Samarinda integrated into the stand so that Mulawarman University Faculty of Science Teaching and Education with the Director General of rising Decree No Dikti. 181/D/E/1978 on 20 March 1978 The Faculty of Science Teaching and Education. Thus in 1978 the University Mulawarman consists of 5 faculties in accordance with Presidential Decree No. RI. 66 Year 1982 on 7 September 1982 namely:

1. Faculty of Social and Political Sciences

2. Faculty of Economics

3. Faculty of Agriculture

4. Faculty of Forestry

5. Faculty of Science Teaching and Education

In the next Mulawarman University has opened a new faculty:

1. Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences

2. Faculty of Law, with the Rector's Decree No. 194/OT/2005, dated 19 July 2005

3. Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences
