Comes from the College Education Teachers (PTPG) inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Teaching and Culture, Professor. Mr. Muhammad Yamin on 18 October 1954 based on Decree No. 38742/Kab on 1 September 1954. Simultaneously, she also was assigned Prof. Sutan Adam Bachtiar PTPG Malang as Rector of the first.

At the beginning of the establishment, PTPG Malang have 5 departments. Department pioneering this direction include:

1. Indonesian Language and Literature
2. English Language and Literature
3. History and Culture
4. Economic Sciences
5. Pasti Alam

Lectures held at the high school building Alun-alun Bunder. A year later, precisely the date of 20 June 1955, PTPG have its own building that is "Splendid Hotel" in Jl. Tumapel 1, Malang.

On 10 November 1954, established a new university in East Java, namely the University of Airlangga (Unair) in Surabaya. Consequently, based on the PP No. 71 Year 1958 PTPG formally changed the status and name to the Faculty of Science Teaching and Education (FKIP) Unair.

In the year 1958, on the service of Mr. Sarjono former Mayor of Malang, these institutions have sebidang land, then built a complex campus that is located on Jl. Semarang 5 (now Jl. Surabaya 6).

At the very beginning, this institution require assistance from outside sources to complete the facilities and prasarananya. Donations should be noted that at that time, among others, from:

1. Ford Foundation in the form:
1. Scholarships allow lecturers abroad
2. Some laboratory facilities
3. Library books
2. Government of Japan through the Colombo Plan
3. Sie Twam Tjing (Samsi), owner Bentoel cigarette factory in Malang, a modern cafeteria to provide assistance at the time

On 3 January 1963, out of The Minister of Higher Education and Science No. 35 Year 1964 which provides that IKIP Malang has branches as follows:

1. In Surabaya (derived from a branch FKIP Airlangga University)
2. In Madiun (derived from the Branch FKIP Airlangga University)
3. In Singaraja (from FKIP Udayana University)
4. In Kupang / Endeh (from the University of Nusa Cendana FKIP)

On Tuesday, 20 May 1964 at the SKMAN building dedication ceremony, held in Malang Malang IKIP also means that irrespective of Unair.

From the results of the reorganization, MALANG IKIP has 4 faculties which include:

1. Faculty of Education (FIP)
2. Teaching at the Faculty of Literature and Art (FKSS)
3. Social Science teachers college (FKIS)
4. Faculty of Science Teaching exact sciences (FKIE)

While the Faculty Teaching Tehnik (FKT) was born one year after the reorganization. Then the name and term faculty who have held the national adjustment in 1982. FIP does not change, FKSS into the Faculty of Education and Language Arts (FPBS), FKIS into the Faculty of Social Science Education (FPIPS), FKIE into the Faculty of Education Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FPMIPA), and FKT into the Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK ).

On 23 March 1968 some faculty IKIP MALANG diserahterimakan branch to a new mother. Branch submitted to the University of Jember Jember. Singaraja branch to the University of Udayana. Kupang and Endeh branch to the University of Nusa Cendana. Surabaya Branch ultimately become self IKIP Surabaya (now the State University of Surabaya).

In terms of academic, education PTPG start from level "baccalaureate" (Bachelor degree) with 3 years of study time. Then in the year 1959 opened start-up stage "doctoral" or Acarya (Bachelor) with the 2 year study period. After several years through the consolidation phase, finally in 1968 opened the program "post graduate" (Doctoral program) with the department as a faculty kependidikan first. Then in 1982 the program is enhanced to become the Graduate Faculty consists of Master's program (S2) and the Doctor (S3). In the year 1990, the name changed to Faculty of Graduate Graduate (PPS).

In 1992 the program D2 PGSD changed its status into a new program of study under the auspices of FIP, the Diploma program 2 Primary School Teacher Education. In 1993 the program was established 2 new studies, namely:

1. Graduate Education Program English Primary School in FPBS
2. Undergraduate Program Mathematics Education in Primary Schools FPMIPA

And in 1994 established 6 new courses, namely:

1. Diploma of Electrical Engineering Education 1
2. 1 Education Diploma Automotive Engineering
3. Diploma 3 Education Electrical Skills
4. Diploma 3 Education Automotive Skills
5. Diploma 3 Education The Metal Skills
6. Diploma 3 Education Building Skills in FPTK

On the whole semester 1994/1995, PPS to open 2 new courses, namely:

1. Masters in Mathematics Education Program
2. Master of Chemistry Education Program

In the year 1998/1999 UM has received 14 new students for the new program of study nonkependidikan, consisting of:

1. 7 degree programs, namely:
1. Mathematics
2. Physics
3. Chemistry
4. Biology
5. Indonesian Language and Literature
6. English Language and Literature
7. Visual Communication Design (DKV)
2. 7 Diploma program that is 3:
1. English for Business World (English for Business)
2. Mechanical Engineering
3. Civil Engineering and Building
4. Electronics Engineering
5. Electrical Engineering
6. Tata Boga
7. Tata Clothing

1999 / 2000 to open 6 new courses, consisting of:

1. 4 courses nonkependidikan, namely:
1. Sport Science (S1)
2. Management (S1)
3. Marketing Management (D3)
4. Accounting (D3)
2. 2 courses kependidikan, namely:
1. German Education (S1)
2. Education Dancing (S1)

1 year 2000/2001 a new study program nonkependidikan of Psychology (S1), and open the 2004/2005 course nonkependidikan Science History.

Based on Presidential Decree No RI. 93 of 1999 specifies that IKIP MALANG changes to the State University of Malang (UM) and based on the Director General SK Dikti No. 143/DIKTI/Kep / 2000 UM has 5 faculties, namely Faculty of Education (FIP), Faculty of Letters (FS), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Faculty of Economics (FE), and the Faculty of Engineering (FT), and 1 Graduate (PPS).
