Starting from the desire and aspiration of the community and with local government to have the Riau University Affairs. This transformed the form Preparation Committee Tinggu College Riau (P3TR) in Tanjung Pinang. However, after the capital moved to Riau province Pekanbaru, the Committee moved to this city. Then in 1964, was established: the Faculty of Fisheries, so lengkaplah UNRI as a university with two faculties exact sciences, and three non-exact sciences.

In the same year the Faculty of Science Teaching and Education secede and become IKIP Jakarta Branch Pekanbaru. But four years later (1968) re-joined the University of Riau and dilebur into two faculties, each of the Faculty of Teaching and the Faculty of Education, so that when the Riau University has six faculties.

In 1981 opened the Non-Degree Faculty of Technology (FNGT) with the Department of Agriculture and Extension of Civil Engineering, which is the embryo of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Engineering. Next two years the Faculty of Science Teaching and the Faculty of Education incorporated into the Faculty of Science Teaching and Education. 1991 FNGT closed and opened at the Faculty of Agriculture and akhimya stand in 1994 that the seven faculties, namely Faculty of Engineering.
